Employee Well-being and the Department of Athletics and Recreation is a proud partner with the McMaster Okanagan Committee on the #MacMoves movement on campus – supporting and encouraging the McMaster community to engage in activity and to ‘Move More’. MacMoves: Fungi Walk at McMaster Forest
October 3 at 9 a.m.
In this mushroom foray, we will start by describing features of mushrooms, followed by an interactive Q and A on all things mushrooms and fungi. We will then walk along the trails at McMaster Forest to find and discuss the mushrooms we encounter. Please dress appropriately for hiking, with hiking shoes, long pants, and long-sleeved shirt/jacket.

MacMoves: The Importance of Movement
October 4 at 12 p.m.
This kick-off event for #MacMoves is a one-hour webinar where leading experts in brain and muscle health, Dr. Jennifer Heisz and Dr. Stuart Phillips from the Department of Kinesiology at McMaster, will discuss the CSEP 24 hour movement guidelines (https://csepguidelines.ca/), sharing their research on the importance of healthy movement

MacMoves: Stretch and Relax Yoga
October 4 at 1 p.m.
This one-hour interactive Zoom class will feature movement and poses with extra instruction for those new to the practice of yoga, but will also include poses familiar to those with a regular practice. We will focus on intentional movement and breath with the goal of finishing the class feeling calm ready to continue your day.

MacMoves: It’s Your Move! Getting and Staying Active
October 5 at 11 a.m.
This one-hour Zoom session will review the importance of maintaining physical activity to support long-term health and wellness goals and to combat some of the physical and mental stressors one might be faced with in daily life. This session will also educate participants on the types of health benefits to be gained from different activities, and will provide strategies for reducing barriers to increase/maintain physical activity levels.

MacMoves: McMaster Sports Rehabilitation Information Session
October 6 at 11 a.m.
Join physiotherapist Susan Robinson for a behind the scenes look at the David Braley Sport Medicine & Rehabilitation Centre. In this one-hour Zoom session, Susan will share with you a look at what the Centre has behind its doors and how students, staff, faculty and the community members can access their services. Your garden is a valuable habitat for all living things year round. This one-hour Zoom session hosted by the Royal Botanical Gardens will allow you to discover what you can do to help support this habitat, ensuring your garden is ready for the fall and winter months, while participating in movement to promote positive health and well-being.

MacMoves: Route of Campus with Athletics & Recreation
October 7 at 12 p.m.
Join Heidi O’Brien from Recreation Services on a 2.3km #MacMoves route around the northeast side of campus. Enjoy our greenspace, learn some fun facts about some of our buildings, and get your body moving. The route will be flat, paved, and have no stairs. Meeting point will be in the plaza between Mills Library and McMaster University Student Centre, outside of the Campus Store. Comfortable walking shoes required, and at moderate pace the walk will take anywhere from 30-45 minutes, rain or shine.

MacMoves: Trees of McMaster Forest
October 9 at 9 a.m.
McMaster Forest is home to a wide variety of trees, including an old-growth forest area. Our guide will start by describing some of the fundamental features of trees, tree health, common tree diseases and how to steward and maintain tree health. We will then walk along the trails to find and discuss the many trees we encounter, including the tree research done by McMaster faculty and students. Please dress appropriately for hiking, with hiking shoes, long pants, and long-sleeved shirt/jacket.

Healthy Workplace Month: Discovering LinkedIn Learning
October 19 at 1 p.m.
Have you been wanting to learn about a variety of topics or gain new skills? Join us for a tour of LinkedIn Learning (LIL). Workshop hosts will show attendees how to access LIL, what is available, and how to search for classes. Participants will also receive a list of classes focusing on inclusive and healthy remote work practices. This session will be hosted on Microsoft Teams. Automatic live captions will be available. Healthy Workplace Month: Mindfulness and Mitigating the Stress of COVID-19
October 21 at 11 a.m.
The COVID-19 pandemic brings unique stressors, social isolation, worry over family and friends, concern for our own well-being, and changes to work and home routines. Although these stressors may be accompanied by a loss of control, you can take steps to mitigate their impact. Mindfulness can not only help to decrease stress, but can also increase resilience, improve personal productivity, help develop connections with others, and augment the ability to experience more joy and peace. This one-hour Zoom webinar will focus on understanding mindfulness and will assist participants in practicing techniques that can be implemented into their own lives.
