Career Blog: Focus
This is the week that has career advisors in tears – it’s the end of Canada Career Month! Just because we’ll be using up tissues doesn’t mean you have to, though. Now is a great time to plan your next step, and make sure that Canada Career Month has an impact on your career.
Thinking about your career can be overwhelming, of course. Careers are made up of so many components: the environment you’re in, the relationships you have, the tasks you do, the interests you fulfill, the values you live up to, the strengths you develop, the impacts you make, the relationship between your work life and life outside of work… And you could come up with something you “should” do to improve each one of those categories.
But change generally doesn’t work that way. We don’t have to, nor should we, try to address a tossed salad of issues. But change research suggests that we can, indeed, effectively work towards one or two goals, especially if the goals relate to one another. So, step back for a moment, and reflect on these questions: What would bring you more fulfillment at work? What would reduce your stress? What would make you feel like you’re excelling? What would make you feel like you’re growing?
From those answers, pick one or two things that resonate with you the most. After all, managing your career isn’t just about generic tasks like updating your resume. It’s about deliberately taking action to make changes that, at the end of the day, make your work more meaningful.
