Career Blog: Resumes
It doesn’t sound very provocative to say that you should have a clean, easy-to-read, relevant resume. Authors in search of clicks are happy to announce the “death of the resume,” but don’t rush out to replace your resume with an online portfolio and a Prezi just yet. For now, a traditional resume is still a key tool in your work search toolkit.
Part of the appeal of the traditional resume is that it lets selection committees compare applicants fairly easily. For Unifor roles, which are plentiful at McMaster, selection committees have to assess applicants based on their skills, qualifications, abilities and relevant experience, all of which are easy to find on a well-written resume. (If you’re applying for a Unifor job, it’s worth Googling “McMaster Unifor resume screening tool”.)
Of course, a poorly-written traditional resume isn’t nearly as useful! And, sadly, the dark side of modesty can often be a vague resume that understates accomplishments and doesn’t define the scope of challenges you’ve overcome. To spruce up your resume, have a look at our resume resources, including the simple but useful fit/gap review. Eligible employees can book individual resume reviews, and all McMaster employees and students are welcome to join our Resume Drop-in at the Marketplace in MUSC Tuesday, November 14th from 11:00 – 14:00!
