Celebrating National Volunteer Week at McMaster

National Volunteer Week (April 19–25) is here. National Volunteer Week is a time to recognize, celebrate, and thank the individuals who generously give their time and talents to strengthen our communities. This year’s celebration aligns with Volunteer Canada’s theme, Ignite Volunteerism—a nationwide call to honour the power of civic participation and the collective impact volunteers create across Canada.
At McMaster, volunteerism is deeply woven into the fabric of our community. Every day, staff members contribute their skills, creativity, and leadership through employee‑led initiatives that foster connection, support well‑being, and drive positive change both on campus and beyond.
Building Community Through HR‑Supported Volunteer Committees
Through the Human Resources’ Community Engagement program, McMaster employees have meaningful opportunities to volunteer on committees that support a vibrant, inclusive, and connected workplace. These committees include:
Healthy Workplace Committee, which promotes physical, mental, and social well‑being through collaborative initiatives that support employees across the university
Inspiring from Within, focused on professional development, learning, and connection through events and conferences that encourage growth and shared leadership
McMaster Children’s Party, a long‑standing tradition that brings staff, faculty, and families together through inclusive, family‑friendly celebrations
McMaster United Way Campaign Committee, which mobilizes campus‑wide fundraising and awareness efforts to support community programs in Hamilton and beyond.
The Working Mind Facilitators are trained individuals who lead evidence‑based mental health training sessions for employees and people leaders. They guide participants through The Working Mind modules, helping build practical skills to understand mental health, reduce stigma, manage stress, strengthen resilience, and support themselves and others in the workplace. Through structured discussions and activities, facilitators foster open, supportive conversations that contribute to a healthier and safer campus community
Joint Health and Safety Committees are made up of representatives of workers and management and meet regularly to discuss health and safety concerns, perform workplace inspections, and make recommendations for the purpose of improving workplace health and safety.
Employment Equity Facilitators (EEFs) are faculty and staff across the university who support equitable and inclusive hiring practices within their faculties and departments. Trained and coordinated by Human Resources Services, with support from the Equity and Inclusion Office, EEFs help advance institutional employment equity goals by guiding the development and implementation of local employment equity plans, in alignment with McMaster’s Employment Equity Framework and EDIA Strategy
Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) are employee-led communities formed around shared identities and interests that foster connection, belonging, and mutual support across the organization. They play an important role in advancing equity and inclusion by creating meaningful opportunities for consultation, engagement, and support for equity‑deserving groups – in alignment with McMaster’s EDIA Strategy and its commitment to inclusive excellence.
Together, these committees reflect the many ways McMaster employees lead with purpose—strengthening our workplace culture while building meaningful community partnerships.
Igniting Volunteerism: A National Movement
Volunteer Canada describes Ignite Volunteerism as a year‑long, nation‑building effort to elevate volunteering, rebuild volunteer infrastructure, and celebrate volunteer stories across the country. From coast to coast to coast, volunteers play a vital role in responding to community needs, strengthening social connections, and creating resilience during times of change.
At McMaster, the impact of volunteerism is felt in both visible and behind‑the‑scenes ways—from wellness initiatives and campus‑wide events to fundraising efforts and moments of connection that make our university a great place to work.
Thank You to Our Volunteers
