At McMaster, our people are our greatest asset. McMaster strives to support all members of our community in feeling valued and respected for their contributions to our shared mission and goals. In aspiring and working to be an inclusive community we recognize that diversity is our strength, and that better outcomes and greater impact are achieved as our diversity is increased.

The Employment Equity Census is an important tool to inform continuous efforts and measure progress towards achieving diverse representation; equity in employment policies, procedures, and systems; and inclusion and belonging in the workplace. The participation of all faculty and staff (including interim and student employees) in the census helps to provide more accurate information about the diversity of McMaster’s workforce, and the census data will be used to support initiatives and efforts towards advancing employment equity goals and inclusive excellence priorities.

The Employment Equity Census Report indicates the university has increased representation across the various equity-deserving groups within our full-time continuing employee groups. The university has also been recognized for initiatives such as employee resource groups; efforts for more diverse recruitment; providing more accessible environments for persons with disabilities; increased gender diversity and representation in senior leadership; enhanced training and awareness initiatives; and embedded Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) performance and accountability measures. But we know there is still more progress to be made, and the university remains committed to doing the work with the collective support of the McMaster community.

On this journey towards inclusive excellence, it is important to recognize and acknowledge the service and contributions which have been driven by individuals and senior leaders in respective units and areas, particularly those who identify as part of an equity-deserving community. Your continued leadership and support in advancing these important initiatives is invaluable and very much appreciated.

Our goals and aspirations to be a welcoming and inclusive community that prizes respect, collaboration and diversity is a collective responsibility and can only be achieved with the commitment and support of the entire community. We look forward to all that we can achieve as we work together to promote equity, diversity and inclusivity across our entire community.
