Legislative Updates

On November 21, 2018, Bill 47, the Making Ontario Open for Business Act, 2018, received royal assent and became law.  Bill 47 reverses many of the key changes to workplace laws that were implemented earlier in 2018 by Bill 148, the Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs Act, 2017. Changes pertain to the following areas:

1. Employment Standards Act (ESA)
2. Labour Relations Act (LRA)
3. Skilled Trades & Apprenticeships

The attached document outlines the key changes to the Employment Standards Act.

Note that the process that was introduced over the course of 2018 with respect to the temporary and casual employee wage grid will remain in effect.  This process ensures fairness in determining appropriate wage rates across the University, flexibility in wage ranges to allow for variances by individual based on skill level and experience, and simplicity through the provision of tools and guidance to simplify administrative processes for departments and leaders.
