Employee Well-Being: The Importance of Recognition
The Importance of Recognition
Recognition is defined as demonstrating gratitude towards the accomplishments and efforts of others. Employee recognition is a fundamental component to creating a friendly, compassionate working environment that promotes the psychological well-being of all members of the team. This month, we would like to highlight the importance of recognition in relation to positive mental health, and highlight opportunities to recognize our McMaster colleagues.
Did someone contribute an amazing idea that has helped your team during a challenging time? Is there someone you work with who always seems to go above and beyond? By recognizing the strengths and contributions of others, it further motivates your colleagues while promoting an encouraging work environment, all while increasing your own emotional intelligence and awareness of others! Appropriate, fair and timely recognition can make employees feel appreciated and that the work they do is valued — supporting their mental health. In fact, it’s one of the 13 factors that contribute to psychological health in the workplace according to the National Standard on Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace.
Recognition does not have to be grand in stature. Informal recognition, which often can come in the form of team shout-outs, thank-you messages, and voice notes provide a personal touch to appreciating one’s work, and is increasingly important, especially during challenging times. Formal Employee Recognition Programs
McMaster’s formal employee recognition programs such as the President’s Awards for Outstanding Service and Service Awards celebration are just two ways we show thank our employees for their tremendous efforts. Join us in celebrating the recipients of this year’s employee awards!
President’s Awards for Outstanding Service
On June 11 at 10 a.m., all members of the McMaster community are encouraged to attend a video celebration to honour this year’s nominees and recipients of the President’s Awards for Outstanding Service in 2020. The celebration recognizes the 167 nominees and recipients who were acknowledged by McMaster colleagues as having made an outstanding contribution to the mission of the University. A link to access the video celebration will be available on the President’s Awards website before the launch. Congratulatory messages can also be sent by visiting the website.
Service Awards Celebration
McMaster University is grateful to be recognizing over 350 employees who are celebrating a service milestone, from 10 years of service, all the way to 45 years of service. Recognizing your peers, colleagues, and community members is an important way to demonstrate gratitude. We encourage the university community to view the list of recipients, and recognize those who have made a positive impact in your McMaster career. Please visit our Service Awards webpage to view and congratulate employees who are celebrating a service milestone.
