Disability Benefits

Our goal is to help employees with work and life changes due to illnesses and disability. Employee Health Services administers the University’s disability benefits programs including the Salary Continuance Plan, the Sick Leave benefit, and WSIB benefits. EHS offers a confidential program designed to support employees that require a leave of absence due to illness or non-occupational injury. Further detail on these programs is provided below.

The purpose of the Salary Continuance Plan is to provide eligible employees with continuation of salary for periods in which they are unable to work due to illness or disability.

The intent of the Salary Continuance Plan is to provide short-term income protection when an eligible employee is unable to work due to non-occupational illness or injury.

Eligibility

This benefit is available to TMG, Unifor and MUFA employees with appointments of 1 year or more.  Maximum duration of coverage is dependent upon years of service for TMG and Unifor (see listing below):

  • Under 6 months of service = no entitlement to Salary Continuance (Unifor only)
  • More than 6 months but less than 5 years of service = 15 weeks (Unifor only)
  • Under 5 years of service = 15 weeks (TMG only)
  • Greater than 5 years but less than 10 years = 18 weeks
  • Greater than 10 years = 26 weeks

MUFA (i.e., Faculty, Clinical Faculty and Librarians) are entitled to 26 weeks upon their employment start date.

MUALA Librarians are entitled to 26 weeks upon completion of their probationary period.

Eligibility is based upon employees providing satisfactory medical evidence to support total disability for the duration of their absence. Employee Health Services should be advised of any absence which is expected to be 10 days or greater.

The purpose of the Sick Leave Plan is to provide eligible employees with sick bank benefits for periods in which they are unable to work due to illness or disability. Eligibility for such benefits is based on available sick bank hours. Eligible employees should refer to the applicable collective agreement for more details. Eligibility is based upon employees providing satisfactory medical evidence to support total disability for the duration of their absence. Employee Health Services should be advised of any absence which is expected to be 10 days or greater.

Long Term Disability (LTD) Insurance protects your professional income with when you stop working due to a serious illness or injury. For eligible employees, LTD is a mandatory benefit with premiums for this coverage being paid fully by employees.

LTD coverage is provided through Sun Life Financial for TMG, Unifor, MUALA and MUFA employees. Learn more about your LTD plan.

Eligible Clinical Faculty members are insured through RBC Insurance.
